cooking fail

by Jenn on Thursday, May 19, 2011

There’s been a lot of failing going on this week. With new appliances, I’m re-learning all the timing and it’s been a frustrating exercises in wasted food and horrible smells.

Take, for example, Jane’s Salmon Burgers (not actually on their site for some reason). It’s a burger shaped pile of salmon; sounds pretty simple. It was a disaster and took a day with the windows open to get rid of the odour. They just never reached a stage where they looked ready. Not knowing what to expect didn’t help too much, and it seemed like the inside was just not heating through. Since these were uncooked ‘burgers’, I was not willing to take a chance with raw fish and just kept letting them cook, slicing them into smaller pieces in the hopes they’d cook through properly. It was not to be. Also, in my clueless state, I couldn’t understand why all the liquid coming out of it was pure white. Lots of white bits inside the fish, too.

Burned Fish

Appetizing, eh?

Finally, they were charred and pretty inedible, despite the centre being relatively unchanged. No dice, into the garbage, and I went out for a nice pita instead. Maybe next time.

On fear. From what I hear stairs are actually more dangerous than an elevator,
http://www.cracked.com/article_18849_6-statistically-full-s2321t-dangers-media-loves-to-hype.html
but I can understand from where you’re coming. I’ve always been hyper sensitive around rodents, even before the Hantavirus outbreak about a decade back.
On drowning. I can feel your pain. A lifetime of only going in water with a lifejacket on or just playing games in the pool shallows has ensured I have no real clue how to swim. Scuba diving seems cool though. I would think that opening ones eyes in the ocean would hurt. Is that true?
On cooking. Frying fish is difficult. It works much better to grill or bake it. Unless of course the fish is already cooked, as in the case of tuna from a can. I find breading and oil make the process easier. The white looks like the stuff between the meat and the skin on a cut fillet.
On The Witcher. I’ve only completed the first small part of the beginning of the game, but can feel what all the reviews were talking about. The whole thing just exudes difference from what has come before and I really like that. That fact that I can play in the original Polish with subtitles is megacool. Not to mention right from the start the characters dialogue dumps any fantasy trope one might expect. When you do play it though you might want to prepare yourself for the *cough* breast physics. They are slightly mindbending.
