minor notes on the cooking posts

It feels pretty good to know that there are wonderful leftovers waiting for me in the fridge most of the time. Cooking has filled me with a surprising sense of pride( which is partially why I can’t seem to shut up about it here of late). Initially I expected it to fill me with semi-to-almost edible food. I know my food blogs have been almost content-free so far, but I’ve been posting them solely for the benefit of a few sceptical friends. I intended to flabbergast them. Lo, I have succeeded!

I love the love ;)

Planning meals ahead takes effort. Well, it feels like it does since I’ve never really done it before outside of “which fast food place is closest to where I have to be later?” The effort mostly stems from thinking about food before I am hungry, to avoid the rush towards expensive junk (it adds up!). It’s astounding what I’ll eat when my stomach goes “FOOD. NOW!!! *grrr*”. Quantity outweighs quality at this point until the stomach catches up and replies, “SUFFICIENT. FOR NOW.”

As embarrassing as it is, here’s what I ate after Friday night’s game:

spicy jamaican patties (x2)
swedish berries
mini marshmallows
random easter candies
protein shake
And a banana

Yes, really. I should have started with those last two. And put the banana in the shake to thicken it up. There is a small plus to Friday’s ‘feast’: I no longer have any of the bad stuff left. Ok, just a handful of marshmallows because I put them in my froot loops for breakfast. Old habits die hard. Nom nom nom. When it comes to proper cooking, I’ll have to start making larger portions because I hate tossing my fresh ingredients before I finish them. If you put bell peppers on almost everything, it’s hard for one person to finish it. Leeks? Hahano. Even mushrooms! It’s sometimes cheaper to buy the big pack of mushrooms, sliced or otherwise, than to individually grab just the ones you’ll need for the next two days. And then half will end up in the trash. That sucks. I don’t mind reheating most things, but mushrooms turn to mush more often than not, so I’m picky about doing them up exactly when I am going to eat them.

Fair disclosure: I talk about food successes, but last night’s session was a failure. I spent a whopping $2.80CAD on the thinnest possible angus cuts, to add some beef to my leftover kimchi friend rice. I did not flavour them at all, and I cooked them too much when they were in the pan with some oil and garlic, forgetting that I was going to stick it in with the rice right after. To compound the meat error, the overly caramelized bits from before just turned into chewy grossness. Lots of chewy in the food last night. I also added an egg, to make it more traditional. The egg came out fine, but made the meal much heavier. There’s half of the half leftovers in the fridge and I’m not sure I want it anymore. A third reheating will not aid consistency >_<
