Mind the Cap

yes, that's a dress and a bad haircut.

Yes, even from a young age you just knew that I’d love cameras…. and be awful with them. On that note. I need a new camera! Haven’t set a budget for it yet — I’ve been thinking about the Canon T2i, mostly because my Canons have been super ridiculously reliable, though I keep getting warned against it. — but it’s completely up in the air.

In a perfect world: I want something light, sturdy, awesome, rugged, also does HD video, has a mic input, and will survive in active environments. Active like, forests and travel and (again, very perfect world) weather from hot and humid to cold and dry.

Thoughts are welcome! Encouraged! Pretty Please! I like exclamation points! Seriously, though, I really need some advice since it’s not a small purchase and one I’ll have to live with for a long while. As always, you can email me, jenn@openalpha.tv, if you don’t want to start a holy war in the comments with your suggestion :)

When it comes to video, the T2i 60D 7D are roughly the same in all aspects, and the only real difference in a 5Dmkii is the larger sensor.

But the 7D and 5Dmkii are the only bodies with a good weather seal. Only the memory card slot and battery door are weather sealed on the 60D and T2i, so if that is really a huge worry then the 7D may be the best option.

At AskANinja we have been using a 7D and a 60D, both have been used in the field as well. But we also pretty much have the workflow down pact so that editing is a breeze. One of the larger complaints im aware of for using DSLRs.

We have been toying with the idea of going micro 4/3″ preferably with the new AF-100 but possibly in a small step with the GH2′s first.

The most important part for us is no capture time, only data transfer and transcoding. Which is usually done by the end of each shoot day.

If you understand your workflow a DSLR is not a problem, just need a computer that can handle the media, and honestly almost any modern system can do so.

Can I ask, what concerns you have about going DSLR? or What are you being warned about?

Hi,

In terms of travel, and being able to handle weather, and freezing cold the best option would be the Pentax K-7 / K-5. They are basically the same body, K-5 has a new sensor (better High ISO, better images, 1080p video).

They are ‘weather sealed’, and are rated to work down to -10 C, perfect for the snow. There are plenty of videos on YouTube with users cleaning them off in a sink or under s shower.

Cheers, Tim.
