Because it doesn’t work. I have moved heaven and earth and gotten ‘jack’ and ‘squat’ in return for almost 10 hours of effort and trial and error. You can see how this could make a person cross.
It all started yesterday. What happened yesterday? Nothing. Nothing changed in my house, nothing changed on the PS3, nothing changed with our ISP. Yet, I could not log in to the PlayStation Network until 30 minutes of constant trying elapsed. I may have mentioned it a few times. The only way I eventually logged in was trying to go to the store for the umpteenth time. At that point I was able to jump to Gran Turismo 5 Prologue and get online, too. Even @AskPlayStation attempted to jump into the fray. It did not help.
Today? More nothing, but worse. I spent about 40 minutes on the phone today with a helpful, yet increasingly frustrated, girl from PlayStation’s phone support. Yes, I’ve followed every single step on your site and read every scrap of information available. Nothing. Yes, I unplugged and re-plugged stuff. Yes, everything else in the house works, including Xbox Live and a zillion other things that use port 80. Yes, the PlayStation is on, honest. Yes, I’ve tried wired along with the wireless. Yes, the ports are fine and I even set specific ports for the PS3, just in case. I even dropped it in the DMZ to no avail.
I honestly don’t know what to do. It’s pissing me off to high heaven and PS Support wouldn’t even tell me the next step if port forwarding didn’t work (which, as I said, it didn’t). “Just call back” is never ever a good answer. Ever. Make a note of that, people. I’d ask you guys for help but, I swear to all that’s holy and good in this world, if you say “check the ports” I will make a mental note of it and then stab you on sight should we cross paths one day :)

Is this normal for the network? Still deciding between a 360 and a PS3, and things like this could sway me.
Xbox Live: paid service, every year.
PSN: free.
Honestly, this is my first issue with PSN. The only issues I had with Live were back in Windsor when I lived with locked down internet and paid to have a second line coming in for me with real speed, bandwidth, and ports. The easiest way to make the call you have to make it to write it all out.
What are the games you want that are out now?
What are the games coming out later that you want to get your hands on?
Which controller feels more natural to you?
Do you need a bluray player?
Will you use it as a media server, too?
=now the x-factor=
What system are your friends playing these games on?
My friends are all on 360 most of the time and only switch when there’s a PS3 exclusive. One poor soul in my teeny group got Borderlands for PS3 first and then had to go get a 360 one to play with everyone else.
I’d love to hear what you pick when you do and you can always e-mail me (jenn @ openalpha.tv) if you want to ask more questions. Don’t forget to watch for the different versions of each system out there, new and used, and make sure you get one with enough HD space for what you want out of it.
Have you tried turning it off and then back on again.
Just kidding. I feel your frustration.
Robb I’ve had problems getting on to the 360 network at times too, though mine were usually ISP or router related.
Just the obvious, clear the network settings, try “easy” instead of custom, or of course the dreaded, backup all data, restore system, hope for the best strategy. I don’t know enough about network technology to say why but sometimes my router just decides it doesn’t like one of the various wireless connections I oversee. I wonder if the wired and wireless are connected internally and maybe yours just died. Better hold on to your original system. I speak from experience in saying Sony repairs aren’t financially pretty.
Jenn I just read some info on the playstation forums that may help you. Posted by a users.
I had the same problem, changed the MTU on the PS3 as directed. It’s working fine Thanks! Any body else from Toronto should try this
Change your MTU to 1492 It does work. I had to manually change my MTU settings to 1492. Network Settings>Internet Connection Settings>Custom.
Hope this helps you Jenn.

I can't believe it, but it worked. I got some warnings about it not being compatible with certain games but I'm more than thrilled with the fact that it's all good with Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. WOOOOOOOOO.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. It's so odd that that was a specific Toronto fix but, hey, cannot argue with this success. You don’t even want to know the hours of near hair pulling I went through for this and PS Support never even hinted that such a change would be necessary, no matter how I pushed.
I gotta track down the original forum poster to express my thanks there as well!
Additionally, fuck the ports. DMZ the PS3 IP.
Glad it worked Jenn.
