end of an era (moving the blog)

Yup, it is time. I’ve been dwelling on this since the start of the semester since I knew I was gonna do it before exams. You’d think with all the time I’d come up with something more eloquent than this, eh? Basically, I’m going to move all my blogging over to OpenAlpha and turn this domain into a static site. I’m getting marks for the re-design for one of my courses, so, yay for that. Now, because it’s OA and all, the posts will focus way more on gaming and tech (and probably some anime since I’ve been watching more at the gym lately) and less on the boring school stuff that I can’t seem to get motivated to write about anyway. Nice how that works out.

I’ll likely migrate over some of the posts from here so people don’t have to rely on the wayback machine if they remember something here that they’d like to read again. This will happen in bits and pieces though since schoolwork is gonna ramp up all crazy like with the final winter exams fast approaching. With only one site to focus on, in theory, I’ll be able to put out some better content and have more fun in the process. The one thing that I know I’ll get flamed to a crisp about (jenn@openalpha.tv if you want to join the inevitable mob) is that the new OA site proper won’t have comments on the main entries. I know, I know. I just talked about working on increasing the interaction viewers have with the show and I still plan on doing that, but it won’t be through the typical blog comments. This will stop me from obsessively cleaning out spam during class as well as turning into thread cop… which I detest doing, by the way. I’d rather let people say whatever they want to say even if it is stupid or insane. However, letting that nonsense continue was really upsetting my family and so I chose to intervene and I told them I’d keep the comments closed and explore other avenues of communication. It sucks, I know. I’ll always have e-mail so I’m not shutting myself up in some tower or nunnery ;)

The OA that exists tonight will change over the next week as I tweak it around my assignments and there’s even a handy-dandy long weekend coming up for more gaming and coding and *gasp* filming. I still haven’t gotten my studio lights so I could still be more orange than is normal but I can’t wait to shoot again! Oh, so save whatever you want from here cause it’ll go *poof* before the weekend. Good times, eh?

running out of excuses

I have done everything possible to procrastinate from writing this essay about the ethical ramifications of the RCMP not being interested in chasing down individual pirates. My room is spotless, the dishes are done, my laundry would be done if everyone else in res wasn’t procrastinating too, I took a friend out for lunch, got my Rock Band disc replaced, picked up a sweet lunchbox for $4 (since the accessory kit was missing the headphones and charger), read other school books over dinner and talked to everyone I know online. Oh, and got much further along in redesigning my sites (partially for in-class credit this time). Still no essay writing though.

I had lent out Rock Band to various people here since I needed to get some of my own work done and I also wasn’t gonna play it while I was at home so it made perfect sense to me. Unfortunately, one friend has a 360 that eats discs. Oops. So when I had people over the other day to play we all had to avoid certain songs or the game would crash and I’d occasionally get the white “please insert a 360 disc” screen on reboot. I was not amused, to be sure. However, all’s well that ends well and I can resume my rocking career… right after I finish this essay and take part in the volleyball playoffs tonight. It’s a little after six now and the game is before midnight or something foolish like that so, in theory, I can make some serious headway if not finish outright before then. I don’t have any classes tomorrow so that extra time cushion has spoiled me into relaxing more than I should be. If I don’t finish this essay tonight I will blow my perfect record this semester of making sure I finish things the day before they are due. I didn’t care about the ethical ramifications of Canada’s online pharmacies either and I still got an 87 so I should focus here and pull it together so I can just game and party on the weekend.

<Me> hey, did you know that glasses only work when you wear them?
<K> the hell you say.

the only way to play

So I finally played Rock Band with 4 people. Actually, it was like 6 people rotating through but at least every band slot was filled. Even with the wildly varying skill levels — me all the way to people who had never touched a video game but frequently hear me through the walls — and odd fail outs because you can only save someone three times, what a riot! They even brought cake*! I still love the solo tour aspect but I hope I can get some of these people back for World Tour that I really will start one of these days.

*the cake is a lie, I know, I know ^_^

snow days

With all the awesome snow lately it’s been tough to go out as often as I’d like when it’s not a short walk or drive away. So, it’s been movie time. Be Kind Rewind, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, Jackie Chan’s First Strike, Follow That Bird, Blades of Glory, and bits and pieces of other movies on TV as well as a ton more episodes of Get Smart. As I mentioned a while ago, I <3 the original Get Smart series and grew up watching it during the 80s on CKVR. I was lucky and got to watch a lot of cool stuff as a young child. Sesame Street, Get Smart, SCTV, Magnum P.I. It was a fun mix :)

I'm still a tad concerned about the new movie but I completely adore Alan Arkin and I know I’m gonna see it first day anyway. If nothing else I will always have the original series on DVD. For anyone on the fence about it the set is really well put together and the quality of the transfer is excellent. I’m only up to Season Two and it’s fun that I haven’t seen many of the episodes that I remember so it’s been all new. What can I say? I love puns. Also, Don Adams and Barbara Feldon were just so perfect together. Oh, and I’ve been a Mel Brooks groupie (and, to a slightly less extent, Buck Henry) ever since I started watching movies and television.

Shadow

My eldest dog passed away yesterday :(

Shadow

I ended up coming back to Toronto since we weren’t sure how Nikki was going to take being alone with my parents at work all day.

I was ok when my parents gave me the news.
I was ok while sitting in the backseat of my mom’s car and seeing the noseprints of my dogs on the window.
I was ok seeing Nikki at home without Shadow sitting at his usual perch by the door.
It only hit me when I had to give my brother the news. That sucked.
That really really sucked.

As for my C exam, I did quite well. I promised I’d reward myself if I buckled down and actually studied for C as opposed to just memorizing the answers to the last practice sheet. This prof has the bad/good habit of making the tests nearly identical to the practice questions so you don’t need to know a single line of code to do well in this course. I did the work and know the code we’ve covered inside out so I will reward myself later on. Right now, I’m just not in the mood. Since I’m going to be oot and aboot most of this week, you can e-mail jenn@openalpha.tv if you need to get in contact with me.
