nice to be back. it’s rant time.

Wheee, that was fun… not. Every time I think that the pain is all well and gone I get a massive headache. Meh. At least I really do have peace and quiet here in res. Too quiet. The only sound for most of the day was my own singing. It’s beautiful and snowy out here and I was very productive and dusted and swept and mopped and went to the gym. I also made the mistake of saying hello to some friends and ended up nearly losing some body parts as a result. Wow. Never talk to teacher candidates when they are stressed. Severe injury up to and including death may occur. Thankfully, not all my friends went nuts this week and I spent a lovely evening rocking out with Nathan and Manny in my first world tour. Since I lent the game to them for a bit it’s not on my gamertag but later on I will convince them to rock out with me or I’ll learn to sing and drum at the same time (or wimp out and sing and play bass at the same time). You would think it would be easy to get people to play with me but some of my friends, sadly, are:

a) rhythm impaired. Not entirely though since I think I can teach anyone to play but they are just too embarrassed to play in front of other people and thus don’t want to try. So that’s frustrating even though you can tell that they do want to get better and do enjoy it. The trick is getting them alone so they can practice without random judgment but these opportunities are infrequent at best. Or I have to get them drunk. Personally, I enjoyed the learning process in Rock Band more than 100%-ing songs these days but my friends are all generally high-achievers and, man, some of them do not like not being good at something right away.

b) think video games are stupid and a waste of time and I’m lame for asking them to join our fun. Funny how these are the same people who have no issue with dropping more than the cost of a game on a night’s worth of drinking. There’s not much I can do here to change their minds. It bugs me more than I want to admit that the people in this category are willing to be my friend even though they will never ever give one of my favourite activities a chance. I’d love to game with them but it’s just not gonna happen. When someone from column (a) is very close friends with someone in column (b), that also complicates matters and I try not to make them choose sides since I know they are stuck in the middle :(

c) decent-to-rockin’ gamers but very busy or hesitant to come down and visit me in my wing ’cause apparently we’re all lepers or something. Seriously. I have 3 friends that have been to my room more than once and one of them is my brother. At least when I lend out Rock Band to people on other floors I’m able to game with them, gather a crowd, and not play solo :)

I have a lot of studying to do for my C midterm on Monday and I do plan to use my reading week to actually do some reading, too. It’ll be nice to work ahead in all my texts to save me time later and I want to redecorate my room as well. With my roommate on a trip for the week and all the non-teachers oot and aboot I get to blatantly ignore loud/quiet hours and do my own thing. It is my duty to live it up and live it up I shall. No more playing Crackdown with headphones. The gun shots shall ring out loud and clear along with the endless screeching as I run over more Volk gang members to level up my driving. Nathan lent me Assassin’s Creed so it will be fun to give that a shot this week after I get some studying off my plate. I keep hearing good things about Lost Odyssey and, of course, my brother will never forgive me unless I get Devil May Cry 4 at some point. And here I thought lending out Rock Band would help me get some work done ;)

Jenn,

Sorry to hear you’re having trouble with getting a group to play Rock Band. It seems like a great group activity.

Keep us posted on what new games you like.

And good luck on your C midterm!

It really is. Rock Band is hilarious in a group just to witness the various phenomenons taking place all at the same time. I really need to document it next time. There are the people that just enjoy watching, the people that love to play but suck (and are generally more fun to watch than the people who rock), the people that think we all suck/are poseurs and yet stay and watch too, etc. Gotta love dorm life :)

Thanks for the well wishes. I am lucky enough to have some gamedevs on my IM list that are helping me when I have questions but I will likely post here too when I need something clarified since a lot of tech people read this blog too.
