Whew. That was the week that was and I think I made it through pretty well. Cogeco assures me yet again that this time my internet will work more than 20 minutes a week. I seriously hope that they are right since it’s really been pissing me off. Last time I was online I was ranting about the ‘joy’ of my computer science courses but I think I’ve reached a point of zen regarding that issue. Next week’s classes might blow that out of the water but the plan is to find someone in the class who could probably use a hand and teach them. This will keep me focused on the lesson and maybe make me better as a result. I’m also going to stop bringing my tablet to those classes because the temptation to let my brain bugger off to random corners of the internet (however appropriate for my Introduction to the Internet class that may be) and chat for those hours on MSN is just too strong. Also, I’m probably annoying the crap outta my online friends during those specific hours and they deserve a break.
On the sports side of things I may have found a way out of basketball. For those that e-mailed me protesting how it’s a fun sport and I’m a freak of nature for not enjoying it please keep in mind that I’m five foot four and a half. In hockey I can at least compete because, well, I’m good at it. Or at least I was. It’s been a while now so I fully expect to suck for the first few games while I find my legs, head and hands again. Likely in that order, too. Anyway, the hockey draft was on Thursday night and it was as big of a mess as the first Floor Rep meeting that I’ll get to later when I’m less angry about that whole thing. My brother taught me something that night that really does apply to most activities here in Windsor. Never follow the rules.
He and I busted our butts to make sure we had signed up and paid by the deadline the day before at 4 pm. What do we do for the first half of the draft? We stand around awkwardly while all those last minute people get to sign up. Gee, thanks for telling us all to come at 9. That was a well spent evening. I had spoken with the league organizer prior to forking over my registration fee and he assured me that I wouldn’t be the only girl and that it was a fun league. My BS detector should’ve nearly made me deaf right there but I ignored it since I’m new to the school and chose to believe him. Since I showed up to the meeting early I got to hear how all these other captains made sure to bring in a ton of ringers and former junior players so they can take the cup this year. This is something I’ve never understood. Congrats! You beat up a bunch of ankle skating players who just wanted to have fun as a break from their law or engineering or arts degree. Aren’t you spectacular.
Have I mentioned how thrilled I am that my brother and I are at the same school? He and I signed up as Free Agents since we didn’t put a team together and I was worried we were gonna end up playing against each other. I don’t think he cared either way but I wasn’t going to force him to take me along to whatever team he ended up on. I was just going to strongly hint that it would be nice :)
Now I can proudly say I’m on the team that is totally going to have the most fun this year. How do I know this? Well, every girl in the league is on our team so we outnumber the boys. My brother even got voluntold he’s the captain. Our name? The Ladies Men. I love it. There’s always that one guy who’s just a total words-I-shouldn’t-use-in-public. He didn’t have a team and refused to play for us. He’s standing there with the league organizer, me, and my brother and starts off his rant with “No offense..” You can guess where it went from there. In short, he’s opposed to playing with girls. Awwww. Such a pity. We were all civil to him even though he really didn’t deserve the courtesy and the league guy actually apologized to me after Mr. I’m Better Than You left the room. I’m used to it though. I’ve played in guys leagues most of my life. One year this father actually took his two sons off the team when the coach refused to cut me before the playoffs (who cuts the team’s #3 points leader and PK specialist?). I was so proud of Rocky for standing up to him. We lost our backup goalie and best fighter but he refused to cut me and I’ll never forget him for it. Oh, and we won the city championship that year. I just hope that guy doesn’t change his mind and decide to play for us after all. We don’t need him to do us any favours and an attitude like his can really tank dressing room morale.
Our first game is Friday at 1pm. Um, pardon? I can’t be the only one with a class during that time. Yes, I will skip my music theory class (12:30-1:30) that day to be there but I really hope this doesn’t become a weekly thing. The other ice slots are far more reasonable since they’re at night but these Friday slots between 12-2pm are going to be rough. But this gets me out of basketball since we can end up playing at the same time and it just wouldn’t be fair to them since hockey will win every time. Mwa ha ha.
I promise that tomorrow I will write about games again :)
