well don’t I feel silly

Oops. I just sent an e-mail to the head of the computer science department and it turns out the problem had been corrected while I was writing the e-mail. I’m going to look like such an idiot. On the plus side, I got what I wanted!

As I mentioned before I’m taking Computer Concepts for End Users and I really have no excuse not to do well. Here’s the course description:

Introduction to the concepts of operation of a computer system, including hardware and software. Development of conceptual understanding of word processors, databases, spreadsheets, etc., and practical experience with their use. Networking concepts and data communication concepts will be introduced. The Internet will be introduced with students having access to internet resources. Management information systems including the systems development lifecycle will be discussed. Fundamental concepts of algorithm development and programming will be introduced. Hands-on experience with microcomputers as well as a distributed-computing environment will be involved. In addition to lecture time, laboratory/tutorial time may be scheduled as required.

As mildly impressive as that synopsis sounds my brother assures me that they basically learned how to use the office suite and called it a day. I needed a fourth course this semester since I decided to take a break from Calculus and I found that this other CS course caught my eye, Introduction to the Internet:

Students will be introduced to the Internet as a global information infrastructure, including the development of early and current communication protocols and services, packaging of data, and data transmission. Fundamental concepts of and tools to support Internet browsing through concepts of Universal Resource locators and Hypertext Markup Languages will be included. Students will be required to publish a website on the Internet using HTML. Web page enhancement through the use of JavaScript and other tools will be introduced. The functionality of electronic mail and bulletin board services will be introduced with hands-on experience in sending and receiving information, automated title searching, and an introduction to organizing information to be accessible over the network. Technical methods of binary data transfer on analog carriers will be introduced and comparison of Ethernet and ATM fibre-optic digital delivery will be discussed. In addition to lecture time, laboratory/tutorial time may be scheduled as required. (Prerequisite: minimum grade of C- in 60-104 or 60-140.)

It’s the part in brackets that prevented me from just signing up on my own since they want you to have completed Computer Concepts first. I decided to take a chance and I wrote the prof an e-mail detailing all my past tech experience and got him to sign my add form despite lacking the prerequisite. This prof warned me that it was still up to the dept. head to approve his approval so I’ve been checking the school portal every time I got online to see if it went through or not. The dept secretary also gave me all the contact information I needed should approval not show up in the next day or so. Go figure that the second I send off the e-mail re-stating my case it shows up in my schedule. I sent a quick apology and thanks post-haste! I’m just relieved that my fall schedule is finally set so I can just focus on doing the work :)

Arrg, I know what you mean, I wanted to assign myself to the Advanced French, Math, And Science courses, I only got into Science, and French, Seeing as I was born French (And I hate the language) extra credits are FTW.

In my case… I was quite literally 0.5% away from getting to advanced Math.. It made me so mad that the principal said. “Sorry, Even if you were that close up I can’t help you.” So I said. “It’s freaking .5%!” “Sorry, No can do.” he said. So I Arrrrrg’d like some crazy barbarian and left… Now he thinks I’m a crazy weirdo.

I loved taking the basic com-sci course while i was still in university. The class was filled with business men and women all coming in to learn office and here i am a 17 year old kid at the time trashing the entire course load in a matter of a week and having all the adults look at me like some freaky genius.

“microcomputers”
Is this terminology even still used in the industry?

“microcomputers”?

Oh, are they letting every one bring their iPhones to class?
