Love and Lament in Italy Concert

I went to the first school concert of the semester and, seriously, they need to advertise more. It was through sheer luck that I got online though my lousy connection and while trying to login to the school portal I saw a quick blurb about a concert in the chapel that started in 5 minutes. I booked it across campus in my track pants and hoodie and was seriously under dressed for the occasion but at least I was there before it started. I even ran into (not literally for a change) some of my professors there. Bonus. Better still, the concert was completely awesome. For $5 with student card I felt like I was ripping them off.

I’ve seen a lot of Toronto theatre and I don’t mean all comedies or Second City stuff. I’ve seen one Broadway show. I’ve now seen one school concert and it totally blew me away. They opened with Lamento della Ninfa and I knew right away that it was worth the run. Now that I have a full schedule I will definitely plan ahead and dress properly. Jolaine Kerly was the soprano and she was amazing. Who says you need to be a fat lady to sing like that? ;) I really can’t say enough about how much fun I had. I don’t even remember how long the concert went but I loved every second of it. I also learned the names of new songs that I want to learn. I studied some of Monteverdi’s madrigals many moons ago and I was pleased to see how much I remembered since the concert featured many of his works. I never quite got into L’Orfeo back then but it’s a different thing to hear pieces like that done live.

Last night I was feeling a bit blue so I sat down and finally watched my
taping
of The Barber of Seville from start to finish. That fixed my mood right up even though just before I went at Guitar Hero II hardcore and set many new records and that did very little to improve my inexplicably sad state of mind. After today I’m ready and eager to get to the first real week of classes. I need to double check to see if labs start this week or next but I switched some courses around and I assume we’ll finally start some real work instead of mere syllabus reading :)
