Computer Concepts for End Users

This course is hilarious. Ignoring the fact that 20+ people walked out before the halfway mark, which is where we are now, this is a course that we all have to take if we want to take other computer science courses down the line. I’m considering a minor in CS so it’s a necessary evil. Thankfully, this form of evil is mostly benign and has already provided a ton of unintentional humourous moments.

I’m so very glad my brother warned me to bring my tablet to this class. He took it last year and he’s not a geek in any shape or form and left with an A. Score. I hope for the same grade so long as I can keep my geek-related ego in check and do all the work and readings. Did I mention this course is funny though? We have to use a program called SAM for our assignments and this requires XP and Internet Explorer. The Mac and Vista users in the room were unimpressed. Vista people can at least get an alternate set of discs but they told the Mac users to get XP and run bootcamp. For a beginner CS course I thought that was a tad out of line. The Mac girl sitting down the row from me had the same response I was thinking, “Wait a minute. You want me to install and manage bootcamp and buy a $400 OS so I can use my $150 text for a $600 course?” You go, girl.

Other gems so far:
- they taught us how to open IE
- WoW characters exist in cyberspace!
- blog is short for web log
- game consoles are actually specialized computers

My friend Lou (yay for wifi and IM in class! And, again, my brother for making me bring my tablet and plug in the first place) aptly stated “You’re going to become retarded taking this class. You know that, right?” Now all the people around me think I’m crazy cause I burst out laughing. I really hope we get our break soon. I’m gonna bust a gut if this keeps up ;)

Remember the big round button on the front of the computer is the on/off switch. Please take notes, this WILL be on the final exam!!!

I tutor a very similar kind of subject down here in Australia…. I was supposed to spend a whole hour this week going through spreadsheets.

Not how to use them, but whether it would be a good idea to use them in various situations. Eg – “I would use a spreadsheet if I: d) wanted to record information about sales figures and produce graphs of the
    data.”

Yeah, my students got out early….

You’d think they would give people the option to test out of such a class.
Oh well I guess college has always been about wasting time and money. Wish I had mine back.
Shields to full and Good Luck!
